View Full Version : Stohlman Observation... (somewhat long story)

First off, this is my first post here, but I think it's an important one for those of us (like me) who are looking at new Evo IX's at Stohlman.
On Monday after our small dusting of snow, I was driving to work in Tyson's and noticed that the two IX's (one MR and one GG GSR) weren't in the lot as they usually are. That afternoon when I was driving home, I noticed that they had returned to the lot. My assumption was that the dealership moved the cars to a covered location for the snow, which, in my mind, was a pretty nice thing.
So yesterday (8 Dec) I'm driving home at around 4:00pm, stuck in traffic in front of Stohlman (going west on 7) when I notice the new MR is just off to my right. I also notice up and to my left was the GG GSR. They both had window stickers still, and the GSR had the obligatory dealer tag velcroed to the back of the trunk.
The MR driver was taking it slow trying to make his way over to turn right near the Porsche/Audi/Toyota (Tyco Rd). I figured both Evos were headed that way to be covered up, etc. Then, to my amazement, I watch as the man in the GSR cuts over to the access road to the right and GUNS IT to the stop sign and flies off to the right. During this time, I'm watching the car buck back and forth from the acceleration spurt.
In my honest opinion, I think the GSR driver was beating on a brand new car too much. In fact, I was looking at buying that exact car, and now I'm certain that I will order one if I decide to get an Evo from them. Maybe this type of thing goes on fairly often, but it put a sour taste in my mouth, and, as an individual that's looking to buy an Evo in the next two months, it wasn't what I wanted to see.
What does everyone think? Is this to be expected, or do you feel as I do about it?

Yeah, just make sure that whatever Evo you buy has no more than 4-6 miles on it. I got mine the day after it arrived, and it had 4 miles, 2 of which were done in Japan, and the other 2 were done as per the requirement - they have to test drive them before selling. I don't know why those 2 IXs were being driven around; that's weird.

I think I might know that guy who was driving that car. I was at Stohlman VW, which is right next door, to pick up our new tags for my girl's car. The sales person who sold us the car is a big Evo fanatic. He's been thinking of getting one himself for some time. He then told us that the Mitsu side let him take the car in to their storage lot else where. He said that he test drove the car and liked it a lot. If I'm not mistaken, it should be the same guy.

That's what I was planning on doing. I'm planning on just ordering my car early next year and will mention that I'd like to see <5 miles on it when I take possession. I certainly don't think that's too much to ask. :)

Interesting. When I got my RR IX MR from there it had 10 miles on it. However, they had to bring it in from another dealer in noerthern NC on a truck. Three of the miles were mine from test driving so it would have had about 6-7 total on it new. I do know that when they brought it in for me they placed it in their covered storage and it was not brought out again until I had made an arrangement to come and pick it up. The only perosn that really drove it was a guy named Robert Latham in the internet sales group. I can definitely say that he is NOT the kind of guy to abuse an Evo, however, a few of the sales guys more than certainly would. I guess it depends on who you deal with and how much you trust them to take care of their cars.
I know folks who have had bad expereinces with Stohlman and those that have had good experiences. It is probably equally as possoible that other dealers have that one person that will slam the car as well, given the chance. Good luck on getting one.

Makes me glad I got my car in 03 from the showroom of CarMax with 000001 on the odometer. Talon of Warr is right, make sure there aren't any "extra" miles on whichever one you get! Also, once you get it, we expect you to come show it off at a meet :D

I agree! My 03 had only 2 miles on the odometer when I drove it off the lot. I got it the day after it arrived at the dealer. It had only been taken off the truck and put inside the showroom. I didn't even let them "prep" it before giving it to me.

how come you decided to sell your m3? I've been looking at getting one of those.. or the IX. The only reason I want the IX is that it will be brand new.. where I could only afford a used m3 for the same price.

When I get my Evo, I'll definitely come out to meets! I'm glad that there seems to be a pretty large Evo group in this area; meets and drives are (imo) always really fun for me.

There were a few reasons that I sold the M...
1) It was SMG. While it's an amazing transmission, the warranty was running out on the car (this month), and I was getting pretty paranoid about being stuck with a $5-6k repair bill if it should go kaput. If I had a 6spd, I would've probably kept it.
2) It's insanely expensive to mod and keep up. I could drop $10k on the car and only get 10-20 rwhp; it just doesn't add up to me. I didn't pay for any maintenance while I had it, but I've heard horror stories.
3) Since half of our year here is dreary and snowy (like today), I felt bad because I didn't drive the car enough. It wasn't my commuter, and I hated the idea of getting it dirty or messed up (it'd only seen rain 2 times up until the day I sold it). I felt like I wouldn't mind getting a car like the Evo dirty, etc (plus the M3 can be a handful in the rain).
I also wanted to get rid of it before the E90 M3 came out, because I felt that the value would drop significantly. I was actually able to sell the car for right about what I paid for it, so in the end it worked out well. Overall, I'd prefer to have a newer car that doesn't feel separated from the road (which I felt from time to time with the M).

I notice that you're in Cascades... I assume that's the Cascades in Sterling? I'm just curious because that's where I live, and I don't see very many Evos in that area. :(

yeah, I am in Cascades. There are actually several of us right there (we stay hidden LOL). I live towards Algonkian park, and another member here lives right by Giant, plus several others just on the other side of Rt. 7. I do know a guy who lives up there with an M3, his name is Abe and he seems to know a lot of people... Anyway, we meet up every once in a while, like at Bungalow Billiards, I'll definitely let you know. You're welcome to hit us up with any questions about the Evo, or if you wanna take a test drive in a "broken in" Evo sometime LOL... Anyway, welcome to the club, since I didn't say it before.
I worked at a dealership a long, long time ago. We used to take the cars out when the managers weren't looking and go tearing up and down Rt. 355.
I live off Sterling Blvd. Im not rich enough to live in Cascades. :(

You don't? Hah, there's a bunch of us. TheSpeedFactor is off Cascades BLVD, and we're running in and out of there all the time.

Thanks for the welcome. :) Hmm, it's odd that I don't see you guys around more. I'm right across 7 from the mall off of Algonkian. I usually take 7 or 28 whenever I go anywhere, but I used to joyride in the M3 around Algonkian when I had it. Maybe I just split the middle of where you guys typically are.
Definitely let me know when you guys do something. Hopefully I'll have an Evo around then and can contribute. I'd be interested to see how a modded Evo feels; my friend has an 03 unmodded Evo that he let me drive a few times, hence why I'm leaning towards this particular car. :)
I'll keep a look out for Evos in the area... I know there's someone in my apt complex that has an VIII RS (I believe, white with a lower-profile wing), but I don't see it all that often.
I think there are actually quite a few Evos in the Sterling area. It's definitely an addicting car once you have one! :)
When did you sell your M3 by chance? Did you trade with Carmax?

All I have to say is going to Stohlman for an Evo is like asking to get taken advantage of. Go to DarCars in MD. Got my evo 9 for invoice+TT and it only had only 3 miles on it...

me neither
thanks for the info about the m3 :) I've read some horror stories too, but I cant imagine selling such a hot looking refined car.. the auto is just well.. autotragic to me, I cant stand my accord now, especially now that winter has set in, I just feel like selling it so I can save more for my future evo.
apparently rockville mitsubishi has a 5500$ dealer markup on the stickers of their evo's .. but when i asked them about the 06 SSL I wanted they said it would be 31-33k.. hmf.. so confusing.. but last I checked they've had the same three evo's sitting their for weeks. I've heard nothing but great things about darcars though :)

I sold my M in September to a private party to the South, actually.

It's too bad CarMax dulles stopped selling new Mitsu. They were so easy to deal with...

Was this a straight purchase (no trade to muddle the actual purchase price)?
i sent an email to Darcars weeks ago, i got the automated email return, but nothing since. being deployed i cant really call them, so i will probably send another email and ask about ordering a GG 06 MR to pick up when i get home.
if anyone heads there, tell them to check their emails !!! haha. should be the only one from someone in Baghdad from the past weeks ;)
cheers
(halfway point next week... 3 months to go)

Yeah, I'm curious on that, too, Gem. You say you got it for invoice, but I can't understand why they'd sell a IX for invoice with all the people buying IXs right now. What did you do to get them to give it away at invoice?

Darcars is off of cherry valley drive or road...in Silver Spring
Hey if you're looking for an '06, you can get one at invoice at Alexandria Mitsubishi. I just took my ride over there for a wash (free car washes for life) after the guys at Extreme Motorsports hooked me up with my first 3 mods today. Call Darlene at 703-405-9983, she's 3 '06s on the lot for invoice until December 20th. She told me to spread the word. Good luck in your search, hopes this helps.
i might try emailing Alexandria Mitsu as well since Darcars still hasnt replied to my email. i will at least give them one more shot since its coming up on the holidays and i am sure they are slammed.

Hey Rue9, maybe you could post a thread letting us know how you like the response of the IX to your new mods. I'm curious, as I will start modding in the spring. Thanks! (didn't want to hijack the thread so that's why I'm asking for a new topic )
