View Full Version : Evo Vs WRX Shootout - Englishtown, NJ - Aug 20th

Ok, boys and girls, it's time for the annual beatdown of the Subie Nation at Raceway Park in E-town, NJ, on the 20th of August.

Here's the link (http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wMTAxNjI5NDZzNDEzZGZkMzF5NTQx.jpg) with the details.

This is where I plan on going for 11s in the MR. What better place to become the 1st 11-sec MR than at an Evo VS WRX shootout, eh? I won't get it for sure, but with a full exhaust from The Speed Factor, some C16, and the new clutch, I'll give it my best. I also plan on participating in the auto-x portion, but I'm not sure if that will require 2 entry fees, so we'll see.

Anyway, there's already 4 of us caravining up there to race, so I wanted to let everyone know in case anyone else wants to join us. Since gates open at 9, we'll be leaving pretty damn early on Saturday...probably around 6am from Sterling with a 7-715 stop north of Baltimore to pick up the MD people.

The caravan so far:

1. Clayton - Warrtalon (05 MR)
2. Seyla - MadMsheen (05 MR)
3. Mike - Mikey52 (05 GSR)
4. Ivan - Ivan C (03 GSR)

Actually, my friend is just riding with me so he doesnt really count as a 4th. ;)

This should definitely be fun, I hope we get a bunch more locals to come up.

I might be able to make it. I'm leaving for vacation either that day or Sunday. I'll edit this post today when I find out.

Update:
Ok, I'm going.

Should we put what class we are expecting to run in?

I know I could probably make it a few rounds in the heads up EVO vs WRX. But might resign myself to Street Outlaw bracket class.

Yeah, hopefully someone will have a video camera. I hardly ever get my runs on tape. I'll bring one and hopefully have GF tape, have 2 angles of the cars.

If you mean the Northern intersection of 95/495, then that will be perfect, because that's the route we'll be taking from Sterling.

Yeah, that's where they are. That's kind of in the wrong direction for Ivan and myself so we will have to find a spot North of Baltimore to meet.

Does anyone else have EZ-Pass? I guess I can cruise through the tolls and pull over to wait for you poor cashing-paying people. ;)

Yeah, I've got an EZ-Pass also, so I'll be cruzing, through the tolls, right behind you.

But yeah, need to find a place to meet, so we know what time to leave Mt. Airy. I've also got another Evo from Frederick, that's 90% sure he's going.

How about Maryland House at ~7:00? That's the huge rest area a little North of Baltimore. From looking at a map it sounds like it's around 2 hours to E-Town from there.

That was the original plan for meeting the MD guys: first rest area north of Baltimore around 7-715. I have an EZ pass, too. They combined the Smart Tag and EZ Pass, so that made it easy. We used to have both, since my wife is from Long Island...anyway, I'll be able to "cruise" as well.

Yeah, your telling me, I'm leaving Frederick by 5:40 or so. No going to the track, that Friday night. This should be a good caravan, we're going show up, at the track, in force.

Side note, is anyone bringing extra gas, so they don't have to fill up in Jersey? I'm not trying to have someone put 87 in my tank.

Don't know any details about the auto-x. There are rumors that the auto-x portion may not happen, but we'll see.

Bring a helmet, a tire gauge, and your auto-x tires + jack if we find out for sure that's happening.

We haven't set a meeting point yet, since we're not sure who all is going...

I just read this posted by Al on evolutionm.net

It is being run by the local SCCA chapter - they do these every few weeks there and they vary the course lay out every time to make it competative. Its a fast course as there is a lot of room - lots of time in top of 2nd and 3rd

we should find out more about this autocross, would you be interested in doing an autocross as well Clayton??

That was my plan from the beginning, yes. I'm just disappointed that it's not a combined event where they use both your auto-x and drag times together for one score.

I just found this quote from evolutionm.net:

i used to run at etown in my slocura (avatar pic taken there). the courses would usually last between 30-35 secs for the faster cars , sometimes 40-45 if it had dual loops. the courses usually have an offset slalom, hairpin, long sweeper, short sweeper, 90 deg and then usual left/rite corners. the pavement is a bit rough on the tires and there r a couple of dips toward the finish, hopefully they'll route the course around them. just a heads up for u guys.
the staff that runs the autox events are a great bunch of guys, i'm assuming they'll be there this time as well. Ernie Anderson is a cool guy, brings his beautiful '67 stingray to the events and kicks ass with it.
pics from one of the recent events http://public.fotki.com/alfisti/autocross/autocross/

This sounds a lot like our courses at CDC, and looking at the pics there seems to be a lot of pointer cones. If it is acctually 30-35 second courses I would feel a lot more confident about participating. I can't wait!

Too bad the pictures have been taken down but a guy last week took his dad's ZR-1 "submarining" at an E-town autocross. I guess there is a lake fairly close to the course and this guy went a little too hot on one run.

I'd like to leave your shop no later than 6:30am. As long as we can get to that first rest area north of Balitmore by 7am.

For everyone going, please get enough gas before joining the caravan. We don't want to have to stop along the way, so that we can get there as close to 9am as possible. Also remember that if you are racing, you probably want to get there with less than a 1/4 tank, especially if you plan on adding race fuel, unless you already know how to drain the tank (very easy) and have a temporary container to store it.

I just found out about the special transportation. And I thought we were going to transport a few import models to E-town. Oh, well... This would almost be as cool... almost.

It is confirmed now that Seyla and I will be getting trailored by the owner of Roadblock, which is the shop that did my tint and clear bra.

As for walkie talkies, I think what everybody is talking about are FRS radios, not walkie talkies. FRS radios are the little handhelds that have 14 channels in the 400Mhz range that can be bought cheap anywhere. Walkie talkies are stronger, bulkier, and more expensive...I think that's what Smoothmarine is talking about. IT will be easy for everyone to get their hands on some FRS radios, but if we get some real walkie talkies donated, that would be great!

Well I'm going to take a stab at it and say a 2 car trailer? Sorry about that one, couldn't help myself. Im guessing either an open/enclosed 34+ ft gooseneck/5th wheel. I've got a 24' enclosed, the Evo fits snuggly in that, takes just over 15' with room behind the car.

Congrats on getting trailered, are there going to be Roadblock stickers on the cars? I've thought about trailering the car up, but spending almost 200 bucks in gas isn't my favorite thing to do right now.

Not sure...we have to discuss that. I'll already have my TSF magnets on the car, and we're splitting gas/tolls 4 ways, so the cost of towing shouldn't be so bad...

Yeah, that is one aspect that we'll miss out on, but we're both kinda glad not to have to put those miles on there or worry about getting home if anything breaks. I saw the trailer, and it's pretty awesome. It's long enough to fit both cars easily, and we'll be pulling it with a Dodge 3500 dually with a nice, roomy cab. :D

Ok, Seyla, Rich, and I are meeting at Roadblock in Sterling at 5:30.

Next, we meet ISP, Walid, and whoever else in NOVA at ISP by 6:15.

Lastly, we meet the MD guys at the first rest area north of Baltimore on 95 at 7-7:15 before heading straight to E-town.

Questions?

Cool, so time to get down to the nitty gritty stuff. I'm sure the ISP guys are going to have an easy-up, is it ok if we crowd around and share? I think I'll bring a cooler with a bunch of water. Maybe some soda, anyone got any preferences or Coke and Sprite good?

I've done way to many all day track events to know what's going to be needed. Also if you have a folding chair, don't forget it. Nothing like have to stand all day.

I've got at least one other guy following me from Frederick. A sweet Evo converted 2d Mirage.

Walid will have the canopy we use at the autocrosses along with 3 folding chairs and a DcEvoClub banner. I would also be bringing a cooler full of water and gatorade, but I left it at Extreme after the Dyno Day, so that's no good.

Ivan, I suggest just doing water and gatorade...I know I won't be drinking soda if I can help it. I'll let ISP chime in with what they're going to be doing as far as their vendor area is concerned. It would be cool to be included, but I don't want to impose either. Of course, I'll have TSF magnets on my car, so there's a small conflict of interest there, too, heh.

Ivan_C
08-17-2005, 22:34
Cool, ahh shade. Yeah forgot about that, don't want to crowd them too much. Need to let them do their business stuff. Sorry guys if I overstepped and imposed.

Yeah, I can do gatorade. Any certain flavors, not normally a big gatorade drinker? But should have like at least a 24 pack of water and hopefully like a 24 of gatorade. I'm not sure if someone wants to bring chips or snacks?

I've got one chair for sure, and if I can find it, a second one.

Also If your drag racing, E-town runs on NHRA rules. So long pants and shirts with sleeves, they can be short sleeve. Of course helmet if 13.99 or under.

I also have an easy set-up standing canopy. Folded, it's just a little longer than my Evo is wide. I can bring it if there is room in the trailer. I also have a few folding chairs. I'll bring them as well.

Yeah thanks for catching that, I guess I should have been more clear on the pants, when your actually racing, you need long pants. Here are their rules - http://www.racewaypark.com/main/rules.htm I would say at least one of the food stands would be open, normally there is one, but I've never been to this track.

Also not sure what the sun is going to be like, but if you need, remember sun screen, hats or anything else you normally would have, for being say at the beach.

Cool, so no requests for gatorade? I'm going afterwork to get everything. Do we think 24 of each will be enough? I might grab some chips or pretzels, also.

We lost heads up but we basically destroyed them in the bracket races. I didnt see AMS run into the 9's but they did have a VERY fast-looking pass after they lost their heads up match but the time was not displayed.

Turbotrix was the only car I knew that broke into the 9's but I didnt see every pass. They ran a 9.9xx@14x, Im sure theyll post on EvoM exactly what it was.

Even though I only ran twice and my mph still isnt back to where it was the first time I hit up a track, I had a good time! The drive back was a weeee bit long (5 hours) because of an enormous traffic jam on 95 but it was still fun. :D

It was a good time....AMS did break a record for having the fastest evo on street tires......they ran a 9.9 something......it was a pretty impressive run. I got to see all the runs since I didnt get off my ass and actually race.......and to ISP.....a little advance notice would have been nice since a few of us went by your shop to meet up!

That traffic on the way back sucked!! I did have a good time there tough, after finally getting to e-town (waited for people) :p I changed into my autoX tires, got teched in and took a pass on the strip. I was a little dissapointed in my numbers and I now have a better appreciation for drag racers, (not that I ever discredited them in anyway).

So I decided to hit up the autocross, It was very intimidating since the course looked about twice the size of anything that I've done so I took an instructor. So the instructor and I go out to the course (he happens to be the biggest one there!) he tells me to take it easy and to get a feel for the course, after the run I see that it's a nice layout and there are lines drawn out on the ground. My first easy run was 44. something, on the second run he told me to give a little more and it turned out being my best run at about 33.something (FTD was 31.something). I probably would've done a little better if I gave my car/tires time to cool down but since we got there a little late I had to do all 8  of my runs back to back. I was able to get to the top of second gear so I was deffinetly haullin ass.

I decided my tires were done so I did'nt even check to see if I qualified for the shootout against the subies. After changing my tires I dragged a few more times and still was dissapointed. I went back to the autoX area and saw that I came in 11th place out of 29 cars so that's not to bad with no suspension work (just strut/brace bar) I was glad to see that only 3 subies where faster than me.

All in all I had a blast, it was good to see everyone again and to meet new people. I wish I was trailord  and did'nt have to worry about anything but aw well. After seeing 10sec passes 13's looks slow now :D

I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR!!!!

...at the Shootout. Was that car just there for show or did he race? If he did run it, how did it do?

The SC'd/Turbo'd Evo blew up on Friday night and wasn't able to race.

According to his post on EvoM, he blew the headgasket coming to the shootout and never ran. It was sitting in this sectioned off area all by itself for most of the day. He did start it up and drive it around a bit, it sounded interesting.

Also, I know when you click on the pictures they have incorrect titles. I uploaded it without checking.

Oh and I filled up at that rest area on the turnpike and again when I got home to check my mileage, 22.7 mpg. I guess that's alright for running the A/C the whole way home and being stuck in that traffic jame for over an hour.

Not to mention driving a sustained 85-95 mph following that maniac in the truck. :D

Cool pics and video, I'm just getting back to this thread after all the madness of vacation. It was a good time, the track was super slick. There weren't enough practice runs to get setup enough. Then I got shoved into the quick 8 and killed by the Big Valley STI. I think with a few more times on the pro tree I could nail it better.

I can't wait until this Friday, should be cool and fast.
