View Full Version : Brembo Caliper Issue

So I ate through my brake pad on the track and had the metal backing plate rubbing up against the rotor. Needless to say this warped my rotor (unsalvageable). But it also melted the seal around the pistons in my brembo calipers. I was replacing the rotors and pads tonight and when I pushed in the pistons to put the pads in two of them burst sending brake fluid everywhere and the pistons flying out.
So, my question is this? Am I totally screwed here and need to buy a new caliper? Or is this an easy thing to fix. I think someone should be able to stick the piston back in and then have the rubber seal to put around it. But I have no idea. So, can this be done and do you guys know where I could get this done?
Thanks. Check your brakes before going to the track.....really well!

I believe those dust seals are easily replaced and not expensive. PM Wojo and ask him...

Thanks Chris. I will PM Wojo. I just talked to the dealer and bought a sealer kit. Theyr'e not sure if it will work though. I am praying it does cuz otherwise I'll need a new caliper. Anyone out there have a stock front left brembo caliper they're not using on they're Evo?
damn, thought i'd have somewhere to get rid of my brembos jk :)

There are two seals, an inner pressure seal, and an outer dust seal. The inner seal is obviously the critical one. The outer seal is important but not likely to affect your braking safety. My dust seals are shredded too. I did a search on EvoM and found a few others with the same issue. FWIW, Alcon rotors built for race duty have NO dust seals. I guess because they are regularly rebuilt.
I wonder why your inner seals failed like that. It must have gotten pretty toasted by the heat. Stoptech advertises that they will rebuild calipers. They also list the rebuild kits on their website.

Thanks Steve,
I think the seals tore because of the heat and the fact that i had NO inner brake pad so the pistons (and seals) were overextended trying to push something against the rotor. I wasn't aware of the inner vs. outer seal thing. I'm thinking if the pistons fly out of the caliper that they are both probably gone. Damn.

you should be able to get a complete rebuild kit from brembo, like he said, 2 seals, dust seal and fluid seal. it is pretty easy to do. pop the pistons out, clean piston, clean caliper inside, install new seals, lube up piston w/brake fluid and press back in. i used to rebuild the calipers on my race bikes regularly, no problems. i would, however, check and make sure your pistons aren't deformed from the heat, maybe get new pistons if your not sure.
