I've hooked up my Sony Vaio PCG-V505BX/P notebook for logging. Everything's working, except my WB. The AEM Uego uses COM port 6.

When I go to device manager on the laptop, there are no COM ports listed whatsoever! How can this be?? Is there a way for me to either add a COM port or program one in for my WB?

The WB is hooked into a serial connector with a USB converter. It basically goes into my laptop as USB, but still requires a COM port.

I've also tried finding a COM port using Evoscan. It can't find any.. arg. :(

Please help.

I'm no computer wiz at all, so take these suggestions with a grain of salt.

I'd probably look at the directions for my serial to usb converter and potentially look for a device driver online. Then I'd turn to Google ;)

You have to set the settings for the comport to whatever your usb to serial converter is on. I've successfully done this w/ evoscan numerous times. Find your converter in the device manager and set the com setting in evoscan appropriately.

Open EvoScan

Click "Wideband (WDB)" on the menu

Then "Select Wideband Serial ComPort >"

Then select the port for the WB02. Mine fluctuates between 6 and 7. It will only show up when the WB02 is plugged into the laptop.

Also, if you try to log and it instantly disconnects, recheck the COM port ... it probably changed, but will show up in the list still.

Already tried that, James.

 Maybe, I need to install the device drivers. There are no COM ports listed, since I don't have the driver for the device installed.

And Rich, believe me, Google was the first place I looked. :D

How stupid am I? Sometimes I make myself laugh. :o

That doesn't make sense to me, though. How do you know the UEGO is COM port 6 if it isn't installed? It can't have a COM port unless it's installed. You won't see any COM ports in device manager for it since you're using a serial to USB adapter. It's a "virtual" COM port, so to speak, as it's just coming in through the USB connection. Or at least, I don't see any COM ports for it, maybe your setup is different somehow?

My Belkin adapter has always used COM 6 no matter which laptop I use. Evoscan actually gives me a failure code COM 6 not available. And I don't even have any COM ports on my laptop at this time.

That COM 6 not available error message is probably based on how you have EvoScan configured, like James said.

It's very likely, Rich. Since I'm lazy, I just port over my existing, modded data.xml for Evoscan whenever I go to a new device. :D

That setting isn't part of the xml though, since it's a drop down in EvoScan.

Actually, you can set the default COM port in the Evoscan xml. I set it to COM 6, since it used to have conflicts with COM 3. Did it years ago.
